At the last Detroit Auto Show Volvo introduced the future of its S60 line-up with the concept bearing the same name. The new car derived from this concept will hit markets in 2010, replacing the current S60 released in 2000, the production of which has just been discontinued.
A look into the brand’s future What you notice first about the S60 Concept is the strong resemblance to the recently launched XC60 sport SUV. The sedan has inherited the same light clusters. The concept introduces headlights evoking Viking long ships and the Scandinavian origins of the brand. A stylish touch that unfortunately has zero chances of making it into production. Like the XC60, the concept features small lenses running parallel to the main clusters. The effect is interesting, but as with the XC60, they tend to overcrowd the front instead of accentuating it. The grille is wider, as is the Volvo logo now prominently featured in its centre. The belt line is typically Volvo, with muscular shoulders extending from the A pillar all the way to the back. The rear suicide doors sliding open towards the trunk will obviously not make it into production, but the spectacular effect really draws attention to the concept. As is the case with the current generation, the roof line sharply recedes toward the tail end giving the car the appearance of a four-door coupe. The rear light clusters are pure Volvo, arcing around the edges of the trunk. Again, there is a remarkable resemblance with the XC60. Considering the numerous visual cues already found on the XC60, we can’t doubt Volvo when they say the S60 Concept will be very similar to the production version. Designer interior Like the majority of concept cars, the interior of the S60 is a true work of art, and in this case the phrase is that much more appropriate seeing as Swedish glassworks Orrefors was commissioned to design the floating centre console. Flowing from the dash board to the rear window, it’s a true tour de force both technically and stylistically. The theme of lightness is also reflected in the floating seats. We will see few of these features in the production model, but the general idea behind the interior style will still be obvious.
