For the 2012 model year, Chrysler will start adding 6-speed, dual-clutch transmissions to its product line-up. The first vehicles to benefit from the Fiat-designed gearbox will be the mid-size Dodge Avenger sedan as well as the Chrysler 200 sedan and convertible.
However, Fiat’s Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (DDCT) will only be available with the 2.4-litre 4-cylinder, not with the V6. In fact, Chrysler states the DDCT can only handle up to 260 lb-ft of torque, which pretty much rules out the company’s V6 and V8 powerplants.
The new gearbox will be optional in the Avenger SXT and SXT Plus versions, while the 200 Touring in both sedan and droptop body styles. It should cost between $500 and $600 more than the conventional 6-speed automatic that will still figure as the standard transmission.
The sporty Avenger R/T and luxurious 200 S models will also arrive for 2012.
