Ford's new five-year global waste reduction strategy calls for a 40% per vehicle reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill between 2011 and 2016.

The plan builds on the success the Blue Oval saw between 2007 and 2011, when the amount of waste sent to landfill per vehicle dropped from 37.9 to 22.7 pounds – another 40% reduction.

By 2016, that number should drop to 13.4 pounds.

At the same time, the automaker wants to cut the average energy consumption per vehicle by 25%.

In 2012, Ford generated $225 million in revenue through the recycling of 568,000 tons of scrap metal in the U.S. and Canada alone.
