Earlier this year, Mitsubishi executives made it crystal clear that they intend to boost global sales by 90,000 units within the next two years, terminating a few of their models in the process. At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Japanese automaker hosted the world premiere of the Global Small Concept.

Designed as a possible successor to the Colt, it builds on three key ingredients of today's top B-segment cars, including affordability, efficiency and compact size. Mitsubishi already went on the record saying that the Global Small will offer class-leading fuel economy and ultra-low emission levels.

The production model will use either a 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre engine mated to a next-generation CVT. It will also feature an idling stop mechanism and regenerative braking system.

In terms of design, the number one priority of Mitsubishi was clearly to achieve the most efficient package possible. Components have been made lighter, rolling resistance is reduced and aerodynamic performance is maximized.

Notwithstanding the unattractive name, the Global Small Concept could become a success story for Mitsubishi, which plans to hit all the major markets. North American availability has yet to be confirmed, though. Production is scheduled to start in March 2012.
