Lotus Engineering, the automotive consultancy division of Lotus Group, has just signed a business agreement with the U.K. government as part of the latter's funding initiative for 16 low-emission vehicle development programs.
A collaboration led by hydrogen fuel cell developer Intelligent Energy and including London Taxis International (LTI) and TRW Conekt will see a fleet of classic London cabs fitted with zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell power systems thanks to the renowned expertise of Lotus Engineering. The cars will be produced in time for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Other cities in the U.K. will also get these eco-friendly taxis by 2014.
Another program will be the development of a green limousine based on a Jaguar sedan. Lotus will incorporate a highly-advanced powertrain, a compact battery pack as well as a small auxiliary motor to help the car maintain a cruising speed on the road. Emission targets are set at 120 g/km. For this project, Lotus is working with Jaguar Cars Ltd, MIRA Ltd and Caparo Vehicle Technologies.
