After teasing consumers with images and a few details over the past few weeks, Hyundai has finally presented the full reveal of its all-new Hyundai Kona, to the delight of fans of sub-compact SUVs. This stylish new model will be available in North America starting early in 2018 and directly challenge the Nissan JUKE, Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR, among others, for market supremacy.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest attention-grabber with the Kona is its unique styling. Designed in Europe using an all-new B-segment platform, the Kona sports ultra-modern lines and distinctive elements like the contrasting trim pieces that link the wheel arches to the front and rear lights. The grille reflects Hyundai’s new visual signature, but the super-thin LED daytime running lights evoke those of the Jeep Cherokee.
Look for innovative, cutting-edge technologies that push the limits of what’s offered in the category, such as a head-up display and wireless charging system for smartphones. A number of state-of-the-art safety systems will also be incorporated, including lane-keep assist and automatic emergency braking.
It remains to be seen whether the Canadian model will get the 147-hp 2.0L engine and/or the 174-hp 1.6L turbo unit. One thing's for sure: all-wheel drive will be available as an option. It’s also expected that an electric version of the Kona will see the light of day a few months further into 2018; Hyundai is aiming for a maximum range in the neighborhood of 390 km.
The last missing piece in Hyundai’s utility vehicle puzzle, joining the Tucson, the Sante Fe and the Sante Fe XL, the Hyundai Kona represents another major new product release for the Korean automaker, which has recently produced fully redesigned versions of the Elantra GT and Accent. We'll see the Kona next in Frankfurt this September when it makes its auto show debut.
