As many of you know, I’ve been a Jaguar & Land Rover man for most of my life. The first car I ever drove, at the ripe old age of eight, was a Jaguar MkII. We then relocated to a farm, and Land Rovers became such a part of my life that immediately upon leaving school, I began work as a Land Rover apprentice.
Of course, over the years I’ve had many jobs and owned several makes of automobiles. However, I’ve always retained my love of Green, and by that I’m talking British Racing Green, LR Bronze Green, Epsom Green, and even the Drab Olive Green which the British army favour! In fact, it’s often said that if “Crash” were to bleed, you’d find green fluids running from him!
Naturally, I’ve witnessed the good and the bad from both companies. I even lived through the dark days of British Leyland. Oh yes, I’ve heard all the jokes (Why do Brits drink warm beer? Because Lucas makes refrigerators!), and I’ve even told a few of them myself (If your Jag or LR’s not dripping oil, then you’d better check that there’s still some in it), but in truth, I’ve always been rather proud of Jaguar & Land Rover.

To me, a Jaguar typifies class and achievement, and its luxury wood & leather interior simply begs for you to try and resist climbing inside. In days gone by, the British gentry drove them, swingers from the 60s swooned over them, and because of one particular word in the company founder’s slogan, “grace, pace and space”, most British villains’ stole them for use as getaway cars! Of course, once they’d fenced their ill-gotten gains, they’d immediately rush out and purchase one for everyday transport. A Jaguar simply made a statement, and that was “You’ve finally made it!”
Land Rover comes with a similar heritage. The original farmer’s workhorse has seen more action around the world than any other military vehicle in history. In fact, in many far-flung areas of the globe, the Land Rover was the first vehicle to be seen by the natives, and of course, the Great British Train Robbers used LRs to make off with their takings from the famous mail train raid! (Try stopping one and you’ll realize why!).
However, let’s zip forward a few years; what exactly went wrong?
Well, the British car industry never truly recovered from the British Leyland years. Union strikes all but killed the industry, while both Jaguar & Land Rover suffered miserably from shoddy workmanship. Their reputations went down the pan, and whilst companies like Mercedes-Benz grew and prospered, Jaguar & Land Rover sales all but disappeared.

Nice memories. I have few of my own and I am prepared to share them with you here. My 96 Land Rover - Range Rover that was designed to the perfection in it's time, was the dream come true, yesterday! I finally made it to get one used one here in Canada (2007), owned by a doctor previously for 10 years. It's looks were just eye catching with the simplicity and durability! ( so, I thought). I have a disable wife ( this is why I bought that model because taking her out for a drive is easier for me, she is much heavier and bigger person) and getting suspension lowered makes her easier task to go for a ride.I am indeed happy to have that vehicle because what I went with it through other vehicles could have been still staying there. However I wonder if all of the mechanics are so honest with repairs and is this vehicle build on only chinese parts???

Albin, where do I start? That's quite a list! First off, as the former owner of a LR/Jaguar independent shop, it saddens me when I hear stories like yours. It's painfully obvious that not all shops are created equal (Independents & Dealers alike). I've heard many horror stories about both, and often it's not the owners of these stores, but the sub-standard mechanics they employ and foolishly trust to diagnose problems (Rule #1...never take a British vehicle into a "European Car Specialist" unless you've spoken to a few of its British car customers first as there's a big difference from working on an old 70s MG to diagnosing a problem with a highly-sophisticated LR). Rule #2 Do exactly the same thing when you're dealing with any shop, no matter what brand of vehicle you own!
Maintaining a new Land Rover is one thing, as obviously it's a high-end high-tech vehicle which needs to be maintained using genuine parts, just like you'd expect to do with a new Audi/BMW/Mercedes. Most good shops understand this and act accordingly. However, a good independent, or dealership, will realize that as vehicle's age, they can occasionally offer certain cost savings to their customers.
Let me give you a little idea of this...You shipped in an alternator from the U.S. Why? Was it because your local shop quoted you for a brand new LR unit? My local starter/alternator specialist recons them for me for around $160 Can, and he's the same guy the local LR dealer uses for customers of older LRs.
Remember, we are talking of a 1996 Range Rover here, a 15 year old vehicle! Take a walk around your local wrecker's yard and see how many other brands of vehicles are resting in peace there long before they get to be that age!
Now the air-ride system is fantastic on a new Land Rover. The ride quality is exceptional, and it's one of the things they're famous for. However, read above, as 15 years is a decent lifespan for any sophisticated system like this...and the airbags (made by Dunlop) are simply rubber, so how many years would you expect them to last? Would you keep 15 year old tires on your car? The same could be said of the compressor...buy one from Can Tire and see if you get more than 4-5 years out of it, and that's only using it occasionally. The LR one is in constant use!
Most LR guys know this, which is why we recommend converting older RRs to springs and removing the air-ride system (I did my wife's 01 RR 5 years ago and it will last as long as the vehicle). It's about a $1k parts & labor, and you'll never have to worry about it again. Most good dealers will offer this as an option to owners of older RRs as they'd rather keep their customers happy than be forever charging them for replacement parts on an older system. Did you local shop offer this as a possibility?
Your issue with the ABS system puzzles me... did they try a "Hot Bleed" to the system? Problems like this usually result from poor maintenance (lack of regular brake fluid changes) and that sort of thing can happen to any vehicle... if you want a vehicle to last 10-15 years or more, then somebody's got to maintain it properly.
I feel for you Albin as I think you've been stung once or twice, and this is sadly quite common for owners of older high-end vehicles. Some shops feel that if you can afford to buy a premium brand vehicle, then you've got deep pockets they can delve into.
I'll sum it up like this...I've been out of the LR business for about 7 years now, yet my wife still drives a RR, as does my best friend (my wife's last RR!) and most the LR techs I know (and I'm currently looking for another Jaguar). When you consider how much these vehicles cost when new, you can purchase an older one for very reasonable money nowadays. They're super-strong, tough as bricks in an accident, and if you maintain them properly, you get to drive a very nice vehicle for very little cost. I think you've just been unlucky mate!
BTW: Your door handle problem is probably just the cable. They occationally break, but sometimes it just a simple matter of them popping out of the plastic clip on the handle. Pull the door panel off and you could fix it yourself!
