Actually, these were my only true complaints about the big Jeep. I really liked it on the road except for one small (?) detail! It is a big gaz guzzler! This thing burns up gasoline like crazy. It took 299 litres of gasoline to do 2,166 km which gives 13.8L/100km or approximately 20 miles to the gallon, numbers that would have been considered not too bad a few years ago but not spectacular for 2000. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee gave us a consumption equivalent to a Dodge Durango 5.9 litre (360 cid) V-8 we used last year for a similar trek.

What's new for 2001?
Though the Grand Cherokee remains almost the same for 2001, there are quite a few improvements that should help the big Jeep obtain a better fuel mileage. For example, there will be newer five-speed automatic transmission that will provide a second overdrive gear that should reduce fuel consumption on the highway and reduce the engine noise. On the other hand, the powerful 4.7 liter Power Tech V-8 will have a hydraulic cooling system powered by the power steering pump that should give back some 14 horsepower to the engine and reduce once again fuel consumption. Other than that, there will be only a few cosmetic changes. The Grand Cherokee will, once again, be one of DaimlerChrysler's most impressive products.
