At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen presented the world premiere of the Golf SportWagen HyMotion fuel cell concept. Along with the current Passat HyMotion trial in California, the company is using it to demonstrate how a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain could be implemented in an MQB-based vehicle.

The Golf is already offered with gasoline engines, diesel engines, an electric drive and, in some markets outside North America, natural gas and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

The new, 134-horsepower Volkswagen Golf SportWagen HyMotion provides a range of 500 kilometres with all four hydrogen tanks full (filling them up takes about three minutes). It can also sprint from 0-100 km/h in 10 seconds.

The powertrain is derived from the all-electric e-Golf and includes a lithium-ion battery near the rear suspension and cargo area. Said tanks do not impede on interior space.

No word from Volkswagen on production plans, but keep your fingers crossed.

As you may know, Toyota introduced its own fuel cell sedan, the Mirai, earlier this month.
