Aiming at an affordable electric
Current developments at Myers Motors aim at developing sub-$20,000 electric vehicles. In a closer future however switching from lead-acid to lithium battery technology is a priority as it would allow to increase the expected life of the battery pack (160,000 kilometers+) and considerably the NmG's autonomy to 80 kilometers.
According to a company spokesperson, plan are also underway to create a two-seater version called NmG2. It is due out in the summer of 2009.
The manufacturer is also lurking North of the border and would like to introduce its spunky little car on the Canadian market. For that, though, the NmG needs some modifications, like getting twin headlamps, an inside rear view mirror and a rear bumper. The experience of Quebec's Campagna Motors, builder of the T-Rex high performance trike, may also become a useful reference for the Myers Motors planners.
From Sparrow to NmG
When seeing the NmG, some readers may remembered the Corbin Sparrow. Indeed it is the NmG ancestor. Corbin Motors of Hollister, California, built close to 300 Sparrows from 1999 to 2002. After the company went bankrupt, in 2003, Dana Myers bought it.
The car he builds today is esthetically pretty much the same. However, it has received major technical improvements.
The NmG was on display at the 2009 NAIAS, in Cobo Center's Michigan Hall (the basement). There, show attendees were able to experience its driving on a 6500 square meters (70,000 sq. ft.) track built in impressive nature surroundings. This initiative was sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to test electric and hybrid vehicles (in electric mode only) allowed to fill floor space left empty by several major manufacturers who chose not to attend this year's NAIAS.
