Dodge presents 2009 Challenger R/T and SE at New York Auto Show

Now that the 425-horsepower Challenger SRT8 is about to arrive in dealerships, Chrysler has unveiled the less-powerful but less-expensive variants of the famed two-door coupe.

The Challenger R/T is powered by the company's 5.7-liter HEMI V8, but revisions to the engine result in an output of 370 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. According to Chrysler, the new-generation engine's fuel consumption will improve by 5 percent.

However, for the first time in a modern-day HEMI-powered product, a 6-speed manual will be available with the 5.7, which will be tuned to produce 375 horses and 404 lb-ft of torque. The R/T will be equipped with standard 18-inch wheels, and 20-inch wheels will be available. With the manual, the car is said to reach 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in under 6 seconds. Even the mighty SRT8 doesn't get the manual transmission.

The Challenger SE will be the base model, and will receive the 3.5-liter V6 that develops 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. The 6-cylinder engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic. The SE will ride on 17-inch wheels while 18-inchers will be optional, and should naturally be the volume seller of the lineup.

The retro coupe will be available with a host of modern equipment, including the MyGig entertainment system with navigation, SIRIUS satellite radio, keyless start, a remote engine starter and electronic stability control.

The Challenger will be built in Chrysler's Brampton, Ontario plant and will go on sale this fall. Pricing for Canadian models has not yet been set.
