I happened to stumble upon a curious sight at the recent L.A. auto show - a car so small, it was unloaded by forklift truck. What I could see of its rotund backside is that it sported X-shaped taillights, looking disconcertingly like the eyes of deceased cartoon characters.

It was the chassis that snagged my attention. Beautifully crafted in polished aluminum, it could have succeeded on its own as an art form, or as a skeletally minimalist sports car like the Ariel Atom. I'm compelled to stop for a closer look at the beautifully executed framework, the meticulous attention to detail and the impressive engineering of the front suspension.

Unveiled at the L.A. show by the Italian automaker, this new variant of the Spyder is 143 pounds lighter than the LP 560-4, and weighs in at 3,274 pounds overall. To achieve this, Lamborghini introduced many carbon fiber components inside and out, notably modifying the soft top cover panel, the optional rear wing, the door panels, the centre console as well as the seat frames.

It also marks the end of a winning streak for diesel engines, as the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Audi A3 TDI both took the title during the last two years.

The second-generation RAV4 EV presented today has been developed in conjunction with Tesla; it weighs 220 pounds more than a RAV4 V6, but accelerates almost as quickly. To achieve this, the suspension, the steering and the location of major components on the SUV were rethought in order to balance the heavy weight of the battery pack while keeping the same cargo volume.
