A 5,000 km EV trip across Africa

France's Xavier Chevrin is set for quite a trip. This is the guy who travelled 13,400 kilometres from Shanghai to Paris in an electric car two years ago. Now, he's heading to Nairobi, Kenya, where he will embark on a 5,000 km adventure that should take him to Johannesburg, South Africa, by the end of June.

As announced last year, eight automobile manufacturers (Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, GM, Porsche, and Volkswagen) agreed to support a harmonized single-port fast-charging system. The result of their hard work will be on display during the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 in Los Angeles from May 6 to 9.

I happened to stumble upon a curious sight at the recent L.A. auto show - a car so small, it was unloaded by forklift truck. What I could see of its rotund backside is that it sported X-shaped taillights, looking disconcertingly like the eyes of deceased cartoon characters.

Like any good auto enthusiast, I watch the UK's hit TV program, Top Gear. I've watched it for years, way back when Tiff Needell and Jeremy Clarkson used to duke it out on the track and when the ever-loveable and not-so-energetic TG Dog was on the set. And now, with James May and Richard Hammond on board, I think it's possibly the best it's ever been with incredible cinematography and some of the best on-screen chemistry on any live show I've seen.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled a system which enables electricity to be supplied from the lithium-ion batteries installed in Nissan LEAF to ordinary households, as part of its comprehensive efforts toward the realization of a zero-emission society. The new system was unveiled at 'Kan-kan-kyo'*1, a house built in front of the Nissan Global Headquarters by Sekisui House Ltd. Nissan will continue development and study how it can be fully aligned and connected with current power systems. Working with a wide range of partners interested in both its development and sales, Nissan aims to commercialize the system during this fiscal year.
