2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport 5-door Review
Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Most cars can get through the harsh Canadian winter with a good set of snow tires. On the other hand, few cars enjoy winter as much as a Subaru and its competent all-wheel drivetrain.

Project Big Bird - Brake job! (video)

Alloy wheels for Big Bird
Monday, March 26, 2012
Smell that? No, not that. That's last night's chili-bean burrito supreme... sorry. That odour is spring. OK, not that either; that's the neighbour's dog's business from January... Spring is here and with the return of clement weather comes the cars, the nice ones that we store away, keeping them safe from all of the ugly that is winter. Invariably, these precious automobiles have one element in common that makes or breaks the entire appearance of said car: the wheels.

Project Big Bird is born
Wednesday, March 07, 2012
Yup, she's called Big Bird, or more specifically, my 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX Spec R1 wagon. I can thank Olivier Delorme for its name. It's a strange thing. I'd been toying with the idea of buying a used a car for a few months. Miranda Lightstone and her freakin' 2004 WRX had been teasing me for a while (I've always had a soft-spot for Rexes) but I had never thought I was going to go ahead and do it.

Shifting Gears
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
The times they are a-changin' - at least they are for me. About nine months ago everything changed for my husband and I. We found out we were going to have our first child. From excitement to fear to anxiety to pure panic, we've gone through every emotion you could possibly associate with having your first child. And now we are days away from welcoming our first-born son into the world (I promise this blog will turn car-related soon).

2013 Subaru WRX STI to be meaner, leaner
Monday, October 17, 2011
Subaru's product manager for the Impreza, Akihide Takeuchi, said that ''it would be safe for all of us to have very high expectations'' for the 2013 WRX STI. It's great to hear that, but what should we expect? New details have just surfaced to clear some of the mystery.

2012 Subaru Impreza First Impressions
Monday, October 03, 2011
2012 is a watershed year for the Impreza lineup. This year, the Impreza and WRX become separate lines. The 2012 Impreza is an all-new car, while the WRX versions retain the older platform for now, before eventually being split apart from the regular Impreza line-up. As a new "platform", there have been significant changes to the driving feel of the Impreza sedan and five-door hatchback.

Saving fuel should be our top priority
Thursday, August 11, 2011
Improvements in fuel economy are always a good thing. These days, many manufacturers are touting more powerful engines and greater fuel economy, and that's good. However, claiming 10% more power and only 5% better fuel economy is unacceptable.

2008-2011 Subaru Impreza Pre-Owned
Saturday, July 23, 2011
For years, the Subaru Impreza has been a popular choice for shoppers after all-season performance, versatility and driving confidence. A lifestyle-oriented model with a reputation for reliability, safety and a 'go-anywhere-anytime' attitude, Impreza boasted standard AWD across the board, sedan or five-door variants, and automatic or manual transmissions.

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX 5-door Review (video)
Monday, July 18, 2011
The Subaru Impreza WRX owners' community will probably send a scary fat guy with a baseball bat to visit me for this comment, but it's gotta be said: for years before its latest 2011 update, the WRX has looked a little bit awkward. Ok, a very awkward.

2012 Subaru Impreza Preview
Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Subaru is one of the few companies I'm always eager to see unveil their latest models. Unlike most car manufacturers, their redesign and model overhauls are often dramatic, if nothing short of shocking, especially when it comes to exterior looks. Drastic facelifts have been the norm for Subaru over the years, and while the brand-new 2012 might not be sporting a shockingly different look, it's definitely gone through enough changes to attract attention.

2011 New York: Hits and Misses
Friday, April 29, 2011
Kia's new design language looks pretty good on its smallest sedan. With those distinctive looks, 40 mpg, and Kia's track record for decent pricing, they will be only one outcome -- lots of happy customers. Also great to see "stop-start" showing up on a high-volume, low-cost vehicle like Rio.

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX Limited 4-door Review
Tuesday, January 18, 2011
Some things are just meant for each other like wine and cheese, beer and friends, Brad and Angelina and turbochargers and AWD. Yes, there are few feelings in this world as satisfying as tackling any road surface and being confident in your car's abilities at coping with what is thrown at it.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution vs 2011 Subaru WRX STI (video)

Honk if these two cars make you horn--I mean get you excited and conjure up scenes from the Safari or Monte Carlo rallies or any great rallying event from the late 90s and early 2000s. Yes, these two cars certainly are war machines from their respective manufacturers and both have created and sustained rival followings for the better part of the last two decades.

2010 LA Auto Show: A Subaru surprise
Thursday, November 18, 2010
Some don't like surprises, others do. In our business, they're nice to see but equally a pain as we can't get ready and educate ourselves beforehand, especially for an auto show. These days, thanks to the internet, it's practically impossible to keep anything under wraps.

2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Sedan Review
Friday, October 01, 2010
When you think of a base compact sedan, you're probably imagining a car with a base price of around $16,000. That's about what a Civic, a Corolla or a Mazda3 cost in their birthday suits, and at that price, none of them includes air conditioning.

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI First Impressions
Friday, September 03, 2010
Subaru is doing what it takes to become the Godzilla of Japanese sports sedans. The new 2011 Impreza WRX STI (available in both four- and five-door configurations) receives a pretty substantial amount of upgrades. Rather than enhancing comfort once again, the automaker decided to go back to the model's rally-oriented, high-performance roots.

2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5 Sport Review
Friday, June 04, 2010
Let me get this out of the way first: my memories of the old generation of the Subaru Impreza were more about the high-performance versions that are the WRX and STI than the basic models. And my only recent road test (other than as a passenger riding with a colleague) essentially had to do with the Impreza WRX 265, a definitely more dynamic ride.

Winter Rides
Friday, December 11, 2009
Not to send anyone into a spiral of depression, but the skies will soon turn gray and start dumping fluffy white slipperiness all over our roads. Winter driving is nearly upon us Canadians, and it scares the heck out of a whole lot of drivers. Of course, there are vehicles that can make it more easygoing-- or even fun.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX265 Review
Sunday, May 03, 2009
Like everything else, the auto industry has to adapt to the laws of the market. The new 2009 Subaru Impreza is a prime example of product normalization. Even the spiced-up WRX265 model looks like a run-of-the-mill family sedan. Therefore, the insanely sporty STI is now the lone rally-inspired car that targets Subaru's most hardcore fans. Executives wanted a more mainstream Impreza and that's what they got.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX265 Review
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Seems like mounting pressure from the expanding Mitsubishi Lancer lineup has managed to squeeze a tweaked-up WRX out of Subaru's Impreza range. Perhaps Mitsubishi intended their 237 horsepower Lancer Ralliart to cut the WRX's grass by offering more power and gadgets. Subaru's ensuing defense play maintains power dominance in the 'PlayStation' car market, and gives shoppers a new sub-STI model called the "WRX 265" to consider. It doesn't offer a twin-clutch gearbox or Super All Wheel Control, but it does have nearly 30 more horsepower to compensate.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX265 First Impressions (video)

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Review
Friday, October 10, 2008
The WRX STi is loosely based on the body of the Impreza, Subaru's most compact car. Other than that, they are totally different; and on top of that the STi is another step up from the regular WRX. Do you get the feeling that Subaru likes the sturdiness of the Impreza body style? I thought I knew about the STi and after the first day, I was starting to think that the performance side of things was a bit over rated.

WRX answers Ralliart threat: more power and grip for 2009
Monday, August 04, 2008
Subaru has announced that their turbocharged WRX model will gain a whopping 41 horsepower for the 2009 model year- raising output from the current 224 to 265. The automaker says the move brings the WRX closer to its big brother the STI, in spirit. The Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart probably had something to do with it, too.

Three new Impreza WRX models are showcased at London's BIMS
Monday, July 28, 2008
London is currently hosting the 2008 British International Motor Show. Subaru was there to showcase three spiced-up Impreza models. First, the Impreza WRX-S boasts enhanced performance and styling compared to the regular WRX. The $5,000 package includes improved engine management and a less restrictive exhaust system. The result is a 25-horsepower gain (255 at 5,400 rpm) for the 2.5L boxer engine, not to mention 52 additional pounds-feet of torque (for a total of 288).

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Review
Monday, June 30, 2008
I was anxiously looking forward to test-driving the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI. This high-performance model is a complete success: deliciously beautiful, more civilized and comfortable than ever and yet every bit as fun to drive. For 2008, the STI is only available as a 5-door hatchback. When I first got a glimpse of the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, I fell in admiration. This car is the very definition of sportiness.

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX 4-Door Review
Saturday, April 12, 2008
The redesigned 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX disappointed, if not shocked, some of the brand's hardcore fans. But the automaker had to see it coming. After all, the move to appeal to a wider audience was a risky one, as it could alienate a legion of buyers and admirers who literally grew up idolizing this model, which was launched about 15 years ago.

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX 4-door Road Test
Monday, February 11, 2008
To tell you the truth, I'm somewhat biased toward the Impreza WRX. I love its ideal dose of power, solid handling and comfortable ride. Plus, the fully redesigned WRX is decidedly stylish with its new dress. For 2008, engineers aimed to make this sporty Subaru more mainstream civilized. Obviously, a few compromises had to be made...

The new version of the famous STI is officially launched on Canadian soil, and it will soon find its way into dealerships. Now offered in the 5-door body style, the Impreza WRX STI is motivated by a turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-4 that develops 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. Obviously, all-wheel drive is standard, and the suspension can be adjusted by the driver in a multitude of configurations.

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI First Impressions
Tuesday, December 04, 2007
Monterey, California - "Left 3 in 250 feet, followed by Right 4 then a narrowing switchback to the right." Sounds like Greek to you? It's just rally-talk. Those were the kind of instructions Subaru representatives gave to the handful of Canadian journalists who had flown in to try out the all-new WRX STI on the winding roads of California's Monterey region.

2008 Subaru Impreza First Impressions
Wednesday, August 01, 2007
Victoria, British Columbia - Buyers never choose a Subaru Impreza for its style. All-wheel drive is obviously at the top of the list, followed by an addictive driving experience (think WRX). But exterior styling? No way. And the new generation, unfortunately, doesn't even come close to reversing the trend.

2008 Subaru Impreza at the New York Auto Show

2006 Subaru Impreza WRX Road Test
Wednesday, November 22, 2006
Subaru's WRX doesn't really leave a whole lot to guesswork for its fans or potential customers. The look is a not-so-subtle collection of reminders that this machine has been built with the help of years of racing and engineering advancements. It's shape directly communicates effortless control on any road.

2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Limited: same performance, less extroverted
Wednesday, April 19, 2006
The STI is a formidable machine. It's rally-car quick and rally-car capable. It's also styled like a rally car with a huge rear wing. But that and its minimalist interior scares off potential buyers, who just don't like the extroverted character of the car.

2006 Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan
Wednesday, April 19, 2006
Four years and three nose jobs later--when will it end? Who knows? The last restyling was rationalized for better aerodynamics on the Subaru WRC rally car. Now Subaru claims this latest look is to coordinate the 2006 WRX, and the Impreza that it's based on, with the new Subie design language introduced with the Tribeca crossover.

2006 Subaru Impreza WRX (Video Clip)
Thursday, January 05, 2006
WRX. Three little letters that mean a whole bunch to a few and absolutely nothing to many. What is a WRX? It is only the near ultimate version of Subaru's entry-level Impreza. Think of the car as the 'go anywhere, do anything' Japanese version of the muscle car. Basically, the WRX is a simple Impreza sedan or wagon that receives a multitude of upgrades including more power, bigger brakes and body add-ons. Imagine the Impreza as the 2006 version of the 60's Pontiac Tempest LeMans GTO.

2006 Subaru Impreza Road Test
Tuesday, August 30, 2005
Remove the bold new three section grille and aerodynamically efficient headlight design from the 2006 Impreza and the rest of the car appears more or less carryover from the 2005 model, but to think this is the case wouldn't do the significantly updated model justice at all.
