New 2WD Compact Range Rover Officially Announced

Gaydon, Warwickshire - Land Rover has announced that it will introduce a 2WD option (in addition to the 4WD derivative) for the new compact Range Rover. On sale in 2011, the 2WD vehicle will emit less than 130 g/km of CO2 - making it the lightest, most fuel efficient Range Rover ever.

Before being purchased by the Indian conglomerate Tata, Land Rover created this - the LRX Concept. Not just another consumptive SUV, the LRX is a two-door that gathers vitality from both diesel fuel and electricity. Few diesels are offered in North America, fewer still in sports-utility guise. Consumer concerns over high(er) diesel fuel prices, due to global demand, are outweighed by fuel economy benefits.

As the company will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2008, the 3-door LRX is said to clearly address the needs of a changing world. Described as a cross-coupe, the LRX is smaller than the LR2 but emphasizes luxury as it seeks to attract a different kind of customer base. According to the company, the lower weight and reduced aerodynamic drag of the LRX results in greater efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

Thing is, when you've got a history like Land Rover, that's a bit more challenging. The builder of premium 4x4's will look back and celebrate their 60th anniversary this year.
