2013 Chevrolet Malibu Preview

The Chevrolet Malibu did a very important thing in the marketplace for its latest iteration. For perhaps the first time ever, this mainstream American sedan gave the Japanese competition a real and serious run for their money.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ Review
Sunday, August 21, 2011
I was present at the launch of this car in 2007. We started off a short distance south of San Francisco and made our way along the West Coast all the way to Los Angeles for the Auto Show. I recall that the hype was palpable, the mood was cheery and the feedback from us auto journos was all positive: This car was to become No.1 in midsize car sales.

2011 New York: Hits and Misses
Friday, April 29, 2011
Kia's new design language looks pretty good on its smallest sedan. With those distinctive looks, 40 mpg, and Kia's track record for decent pricing, they will be only one outcome -- lots of happy customers. Also great to see "stop-start" showing up on a high-volume, low-cost vehicle like Rio.

2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT Platinum Edition Review
Sunday, October 31, 2010
The Chevrolet Malibu is on its last kilometres. One of the top five best-selling mid-size sedans in Canada in 2009, alongside the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, it will soon be making way for its successor.

2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu Pre-Owned
Saturday, September 26, 2009
Here's a good example of a successful model re-introduction. Chevrolet brought the Malibu back from the grave in 1997. Shortly after, it started gaining popularity with customers and press alike. Plenty of awards followed. The 'fifth generation' Malibu (or first-generation modern Malibu) was sold until 2003-- when the Opel-based 2004 Malibu hit the road.

GM Canada will supply 300+ Malibu Hybrids for the Olympics!
Friday, July 03, 2009
Don't miss the Vancouver Olympic Games if you want to catch a glimpse of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid! While General Motors is busy developing a "parallel"-type hybrid variant of this midsize sedan for the 2011 model year (rumor has it the car could also be a plug-in hybrid), the bankrupt automaker announced in June that the few 2010 models being produced would find their way into vehicle fleets across the continent.

2009 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT Review
Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Malibu is one of those cars that seem to fly just below the radar. Chevrolet keeps improving on the Malibu, even adding a hybrid option. Even without the big dollar ad campaigns, Malibu continues to sell well. In these turbulent times, Malibu may well be one of the ''bread and butter'' cars for Chevrolet as consumers look for the three ''R''s of new car buying; Reasonable size, Reasonable purchase cost and Reasonable operating costs (low maintenance and good fuel economy).

2009 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT Review
Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Road tests often hold a few surprises. For instance, I would have never imagined that I could have as much fun driving a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT, the ideal representative's sedan. During a 1,200-km road trip in some of the worst conditions you will ever see, I discovered a major difference between this midsize car and its green counterpart, the Malibu Hybrid.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu spied!
Monday, July 31, 2006
The upcoming Malibu has been misidentified by some as the next Impala, but these pictures ARE in fact of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu.Codenamed GMX386 and riding on the new Epsilon 2 platform, the Malibu is larger than the current one. Actually it seems to be catching up in size with the Impala - the future of which remains uncertain. The stylish new front-wheel drive Malibu should be at dealerships in the fall of 2007.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Review
Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Saving the planet is a good idea, as long as we're willing to make sacrifices or drastically change the way we live. The automobile has been targeted as a polluter, so we must either get rid of it or find new ways to get around without further hurting the environment. Hybrid vehicles are the craze right now, bridging the gap between gas-powered and electric vehicles.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ Review
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
When auto journalists elected the new Chevrolet Malibu as the 2008 North American Car of the Year, I have to admit I was somewhat surprised. Of course, I had yet to take it for a spin, which might explain my slight puzzlement. However, my perception changed as soon as I got to spend some quality time with the new Malibu. This sedan marks a giant step forward for General Motors and it probably deserves all the accolades and awards won by the automaker. The new Chevy Malibu definitely has a better look to match its personality. Even though the rear-end treatment is not on par with the rest of the package, the styling is bold and classy, with a couple of fancy touches like chrome accents which further enhance its character.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT Review
Friday, April 25, 2008
Chevrolet's new Malibu is a front-wheel-drive four-door sedan that has been warmly embraced by the critics and public alike. Although the Malibu holds a rich history, over time it evolved into a plebian grocery-getter losing much of its former glory in the process. Can the latest incarnation of this once worshipped Chevy rekindle the spirit? Breaking the mold
The 2008 Malibu is quite a departure stylistically from its predecessor. The car now projects a clean, Euro-influenced design that is emphasized by swept-back headlights, flared wheel wells and a heavily raked front windshield. This is bold stuff for Chevy, and it's definitely paying off.

With Twisted Sisters on full blast and its occupants trying their best to sing along, the Chevrolet Malibu is driving down Road 101 in the heart of California. Inside, two Canadian journalists (including yours truly) are accompanied by Chris Hay, Marketing Director for the new Malibu -- and quite a good vocalist, I must confess.

GM to conduct $100 million marketing blitz for new Malibu
Saturday, August 18, 2007
This could be the most important car launch GM has ever made. The heavily re-designed Malibu sedan is gearing up to be released into a hotly competitive market full of established competitors. To make sure the new Malibu gets noticed, GM will launch an advertising and promotion blitz comparable to last year's launch of the redesigned Camry from Toyota. Though still heavily dependent on high-margin pickup truck sales, GM is banking on cars this year as well- with the launch of the Malibu and redesigned Cadillac CTS.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu at the 2007 Toronto Auto Show (VIDEO)
Wednesday, February 14, 2007
The all-new Malibu made its debut in Detroit and is once again on display. The new midsize family sedan shares its underpinnings with the Aura, G6 and 9-3; the Epsilon platform has already proven itself. Aesthetically speaking, the new Malibu looks great and on the surface, could prove to be real competition the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Obviously, we will have to test it first. Engines choices will be between the 164 hp 2.4L 4-pot and the persuasive 252 hp 3.6L V6. Both will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Safety features include standard ABS, traction control and 6 air bags. Stability control will be available on higher-end LT and LTZ models. On an interesting note, the 2008 Malibu has a longer wheelbase than the current Impala. We can therefore assume that the next Impala will be considerably bigger in 2009. Expect to see the Malibu in showrooms this fall.

2006 Malibu Maxx SS Road Test
Friday, June 09, 2006
As you probably know, the Maxx has been around for a few years now. It means five-door in Malibu-speak and is the closest thing Chevrolet has to a sports wagon and utilizes General Motors' mid-size Epsilon platform that can also be found underpinning the likes of the Pontiac G6, Saab 9-3, Opel/Vauxhall Vectra and upcoming Saturn Aura. In Europe the Maxx is pitched as an upscale executive limousine above the Vectra in the form of the Opel Signum.

2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx SS Road Test
Friday, April 14, 2006
Super practical, sure, and definitely sporty, but Super Sport? I don't think so. I think Chevrolet did almost everything right with this car, but then they went and messed it up by trying to claim it was something that it quite simply is not. You don't put a badge on a car and expect people to buy it just because the badge says it's hot. I feel kind of embarrassed for GM, who now have to live with all the comparisons that will embarrass the Malibu SS. I would cite some examples, but I'm not really much for classic muscle cars, but anyone who loves the SS nameplate of olden days won't likely be satisfied with the meager portion of muscle found under the hood of this tepid rod.

2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx LT Road Test
Saturday, September 25, 2004
I have to come clean in saying I really didn't like the Malibu sedan a heck of a lot when I last tested it. Like many, I can quickly be turned off, or for that matter turned on by a car's styling, and the Malibu's pudgy truck-like front end, swoopy fender accent lines and bulky butt end left me flat. Its interior is also a little too "plasticky" for me, while I didn't find its handling as exciting as those European-style TV ads make it appear.

2004 Malibu Maxx Review
Wednesday, February 04, 2004
By crafting one great common architecture instead of three or four mediocre ones for different lines of cars, the car company saves money and consumers get better cars, and the biggest beneficiary of all is the person who buys the least expensive model.
