By adding nitrogen as an additive, Shell is planning on offering North American consumers the cleanest gas available on the continent to date. The announcement, made during a press conference, also responds to the demands of certain performance car manufacturers that are calling for cleaner and cleaner gasolines to facilitate the development of new technologies.

Shell brings Urban Concept to Eco-marathon

A new category has been added to the 2009 Shell Eco-marathon Americas, a competition where students are asked to design, build and test vehicles to see who can go the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel. The point of the "Urban Concept" class is to create vehicles that are more fuel-efficient, yet that resemble cars seen on roads today.

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas, which took place from April 10 to 13 at the California Speedway, in Fontana, allowed students from Canada, Mexico and the United States to showcase their skills in the development of extremely fuel-efficient vehicles. Students from Mater Dei High School, in Indiana, set a new mileage record this year. The goal of the competition was to see which car could drive the farthest while using the least amount of fuel possible. The new mark is 1,208.6 kilometers on a single liter of fuel. Actually, three teams broke the record set in 2007 by Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Imagine a vehicle that could cover 1,000 kilometers while burning only 1.238 liters of fuel. Impossible, you say? Well, guess again: students from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (California) did just that. Their incredible performance made them winners of the first Shell Eco-marathon Americas, a competition in which students prepare their eco-friendly vehicles to drive the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel, whether it's gasoline, diesel or alternative energies such as liquefied petrol, biofuel, hydrogen or solar power.

In 2007, the team from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (California) won the first Shell Eco-marathon Americas with a gasoline-powered vehicle that delivered an incredible 1,902.7 mpg (0.1238 L/100 km). Needless to say that the stakes are high for 2008! Over 50 teams (twice as many as last year) from North and South America will try to break this mark by taking part in the 2008 Shell Eco-marathon Americas. It may not be the fastest race you've ever seen, but it's probably the most fuel-efficient.

Shell is the world's first gasoline retailer to adopt secure biometric payment technology. The pilot project is a collaboration between Shell and a company called Pay By Touch- a world leader in biometric authentication, data management and payment solutions.
