Taking it to the repair shop
Thursday, April 19, 2012
As an auto journo, and a good one I might add (no false modesty here...), I'm expected to know quite a lot about cars. I do (continued modesty). In fact, I'm a trained automotive technician.

2012 Volvo XC70 T6 AWD Platinum First Impressions
Thursday, March 15, 2012
The XC70 is Volvo's original crossover vehicle, which more closely resembles an all-wheel-drive wagon than a crossover. Many prefer the wagon profile of the XC70 over that of a taller, somewhat more awkward SUV/crossover.

Winter Tires Story
Monday, December 14, 2009
As the December 15th deadline fast approaches (like, tomorrow), I thought it useful to recount my winter/summer tire story. For starters, I purchased a used 2004 Volvo XC70 in the Fall of 2008. As I picked up the car in Toronto (not in my native Montreal), I was aware that the car required some new rubber.

2010 Volvo XC70 Preview
Tuesday, December 22, 2009
The highly capable Volvo XC70 was redesigned for 2008, as such 2010 brings little in the way of changes other than a realignment of options, to bring the vehicle's content packages more inline with the desires of the Canadian consumer.

Volvo to study driving behaviour
Sunday, December 21, 2008
Well known for the safety of its automotive vehicles, Swedish manufacturer Volvo will conduct a study to compile a variety of data on driving behaviour in specific situations. For the FOT research project, part of the EuroFOT project established by the SAFER research center, the automaker will equip some 100 Volvo V70s and XC70s with cameras and computers.

2001-2007 Volvo V70/XC70 Pre-Owned
Saturday, December 06, 2008
Volvo's conservative styling and luxury earned their products a loyal following- though unquestioned safety was also responsible in parking their machines in driveways across the country. Safety is serious business for the Swedes, and a Volvo wagon's always been a sure way to get the wife and kids around in complete and total safety.

2009 Volvo XC70 T6 Review
Sunday, October 26, 2008
Volvo's stylish all-wheel-drive (AWD) XC70 wagon has been going to the gym. The addition of a turbocharger to its transversely mounted inline-six elevates this outdoorsy Swede to a whole new level of performance. Those believing that the XC70 is a sedate Swede will have that perception quickly altered once behind the wheel of a T6 version of Volvo's highly practical SUV wannabe.

2009 Volvo XC70 T6 AWD Review
Friday, September 12, 2008
On the heels of the Subaru Outback of the late nineties, Volvo decided it was time to offer a utility-type vehicle. Designers of the Swedish automaker took inspiration from their large family wagon and concocted what is arguably the best of both worlds. Here we not only have a typical wagon offering plenty of room for everybody and their gear, but also one with an adventurer look and, more importantly, interesting off-road capabilities.

2008 Volvo XC70 3.2 AWD Review (video)
Saturday, May 24, 2008
Let's say you're looking to spend between $40,000 and $60,000 on a vehicle that can comfortably and safely get you, your family and your stuff around, 365 days a year. Something reasonably fun to drive and upper-scale is in order, and you don't tow a heavy boat-so there's no need to feed a thirsty SUV.The mental flowchart above has pointed you in the direction of a premium crossover wagon- a genre that Sweden's Volvo is largely responsible for putting on the map.

2008 Volvo XC70 3.2 AWD Review
Monday, May 12, 2008
For those not desirous of the extra heft accompanying most SUVs, an all-wheel-drive (AWD) wagon is a worthwhile alternative; the refreshed and re-powered 2008 Volvo XC70 is an exceptional example of that. Although Volvo styling has become slightly more daring over the years, they resist radical design changes. For 2008, the XC70 receives a new nose, tail and plenty of reshaped sheet metal. It also receives a comprehensive cabin makeover. Despite the totality of these significant changes, it's still an XC70 to anyone vaguely familiar to Volvo's lineup, and from a marketing perspective that makes sense.

Volvo Winter Testing Part 2 - driving the XC70
Thursday, February 07, 2008
Riksgränsen, Sweden. Today, we travelled over 400 kilometers on snow- and ice-covered roads. This time, our vehicle was a new XC70 with all-wheel drive. Right from the start, we took a detour through Norway on Road E6. During the first section, we had no other choice but to follow a snowplow because violent squalls were blowing huge amounts of snow in the middle of the road. Our Spanish and Italian colleagues wisely complied.

2008 Volvo XC70 3.2 AWD Road Test
Thursday, January 31, 2008
The Volvo XC70 is a pretty brilliant idea per se. To tell you the truth, I think it's the perfect mold for an off-road vehicle, one that should suit the needs of a large number of unfortunate drivers who chose to buy an unnecessarily big and thirsty truck. Much like the Subaru Outback and the now-defunct Audi Allroad, the XC70 combines off-road capability with the versatility of a decently-sized wagon. Quite a simple formula, isn't it? Thank you 1980 AMC Eagle!

The V70 and XC70 wagons are all-new. Both models are powered by a 3.2-liter V6 that produces 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The V70 is front-wheel drive while the XC70 benefits from an all-wheel drive system and higher ground clearance.

Volvo shows off the XC60 Concept (VIDEO)
Sunday, January 07, 2007
The XC60 follows a similar design language to the C30 with its two-door configuration, and Volvo CEO Fredrik Arp says it might be the C30 owner's next car. "Equally sporty and exciting, but far more capable" is how he describes it. "The concept car offers a good indication of how the "real" XC60 will look".

I could see why one would get that impression from the PR shots, But no, sorry, this is no Amphicar re-do. Volvo of Canada has produced a limited edition of 100 copies of Ocean Race XC70s and 100 copies of Ocean Race XC90s.

Volvo adds two limited editions to XC70

Normally a company puts together a ''limited edition'' version of a particular model that gives consumers more for the money when that model's losing favor with the public.

2005 Volvo XC70 Cross Country Winter Road Test
Thursday, February 03, 2005
Prior to a recent drive, I had forgotten just how good Volvo's XC70 Cross Country is, what with most everyones' focus being diverted to the Swedish automaker's more recently introduced XC90, a true sport utility. The fact that the XC70 is not a true SUV, but rather a tough looking wagon cum crossover, similar in configuration to Audi's allroad quattro (lower case intended) and Subaru's Legacy-based Outback, the latter being one of the Granddaddies of the crossover segment, is a bonus in my books.

Gone is the dash-mounted flower vase in the latest version of Volkswagen's Bug. Gone too is much of its cutesiness, replaced by a notable degree of sportiness intended to broaden the Beetle's target market by attracting male attention.
