Mercedes-Benz Canada invited journalists to Montreal to test-drive three new exciting models: the 2009 SL and SLK sports convertibles as well as the 2009 CLS four-door coupe.

Year of upgrades
All three have been revised to varying degrees, both in terms of aesthetics and interior layout. First, they get a newly-engineered Direct Drive steering system offering quicker response at low speed, in sharp turns and during parking maneuvers. It makes the driving experience much safer and more pleasant, particularly on very twisty roads.

Improved technology
Mercedes-Benz also incorporated a next-generation infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. This time, it will be compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. A new, clearer liquid crystal display (LCD) makes for a more intuitive reading and operation of the navigation system with hard drive. You can even watch movies on this front monitor when the car is in Park mode.

Hi-fi stereo
Thanks to Harman Kardon, each model receives a speaker package that's been tailor-made to its own unique environment. While sound quality is excellent, the various audio settings still require too much attention while driving -- either you preset your favorite stations or you stop on the side of the road. This sophisticated unit, however, offers multiple features like MP3 playback, auxiliary input, 6-CD changer and even a port for your Flash memory card.

SLK-Class
Introduced in 1996, the SLK is currently in its second generation (2004). For 2009, some serious changes have been made to the front grille. Larger mirrors have also been added to improve safety. The dashboard and interior fit and finish are impressive in terms of comfort and ergonomics. The 3-spoke steering wheel offers a better grip and makes it easier to read the white-face gauges.
