2008 Nissan Versa 1.8 SL Review

As SUVs and crossovers lose favor due to the ever-rising cost of the golden nectar that powers them, demand for ultra fuel-efficient, highly-adaptable vehicles such as Nissan's Versa will undoubtedly grow like the weeds in an unkempt lawn.

To my unworldly eye, the Versa projects a decidedly French image.

To my unworldly eye, the Versa projects a decidedly French image, such that a Renault emblem on its nose wouldn't look out of place. Automobiles such as this have been fulfilling family duties in Europe since the Renaissance, or thereabouts. And for good reason.

Economy and versatility are the leading factors in why these boxy yet spacious vehicles are winning over hearts and wallets around the globe, and the Versa is an excellent example. Nissan has imbued their 5-door hatchback with character and distinction. I'm not about to admit liking it all that much but it does tend to grow on you in a positive way.

Many modern Nissan design cues have been incorporated into the Versa's styling. Its interior architecture and layout embraces functionality while managing to project a touch of flair to complement the uniqueness of the exterior sheetmetal.

"Versa-tility," the operative word
As with many crossovers and smaller SUVs, the Versa is a tall vehicle that for its size encompasses an expansive cargo area accessed through a large rear portal. The cargo area behind the rear seats is deep, and at 507 litres, larger than expected.

Folding the rear seatbacks down increases the cargo area substantially however it should be noted that doing so results in a split-level load floor. Despite its two-tier floor, the cargo bay provides 1,427 litres of usable volume.

It's not only cargo that finds plenty of accommodation in the Versa, humans are granted a wealth of space as well. The tall cabin design places a wide gap between the roof liner and the most abundant of coifs. Legroom is also generous both up front and in the rear.
