Force India Formula 1 technical director, Andy Green explained why the new Mercedes-powered VJM08 will not run during the first 2015 winter test in Jerez.
Last week, the team announced that it would run last year’s VJM07 in Jerez. Instead the engineers would like to spend more time working on the aerodynamics of the new car. Force India have switched their aerodynamic development to a different wind tunnel this year after signing a deal to use Toyota’s impressive facility in Cologne, Germany, which will give it access to a 60% model for the first time. Talking to Sky Sports F1, Andy Green claimed spending more time in the Toyota’s wind tunnel with the VJM08 is a wise decision. “We’ve never really been a big fan of Jerez as a test track. It’s very unique – the asphalt is very unique – we don’t race there and Pirelli are bringing the tyre that we tested in Abu Dhabi. We’re happy to give it a miss, to be honest, and take the development time,” he told Sky.
Team driver Sergio Perez explained that his extra time would help the team eliminate the fundamental aerodynamic problems in the design of the 2014 VJM07. “We were really fragile to the wind and the new wind tunnel is going to help quite a lot,” Perez predicted. “The first test is always useful to see the cooling of the car, the package of the car, the systems. So I believe if we can be ready on that respect, knowing the car and knowing the engine, and if we can use Barcelona as a proper test to do the right learning on the car then I think we should be in a good position,” the Mexican added.
