Former team boss Gian Carlo Minardi is afraid the Italian Grand Prix might suffer the same faith as the German Grand Prix, which was dropped this season.
Monza's current deal expires in 2016. A new contract would reportedly cost between 22 and 24 millions euros in facility upgrades. But the only current source of income for the event organizer is ticket sales. "Too little to survive and cover all costs," wrote Minardi in a newsletter. Why not take inspiration from international swimming competitions?
"Formula 1 must be treated as World Swimming Championships, the Olympics or World Football Championships, events in which not only the Sports Federation but also the Government can intervene. "Do not forget that Italy has the number one cultural heritage in the world," Minardi adds. "Therefore, we should use Formula 1 as a magnet to attract tourists, studying holiday packages, pre and post grands prix, with worldwide tour operators. Besides, we are talking about a city which is easily accessible by plane and high-speed trains." Recent Articles
