Reigning GP2 series’ champion, Briton Jolyon Palmer enjoyed a late run in the Lotus E23 fitted with super soft Pirelli tires to set the fastest time of Day 2 of in-season testing at Barcelona.
Palmer posted a 1m26.080 in the final hour to move ahead of Mercedes’ Pascal Wehrlein who had led throughout the day in the W06.
Wehrlein completed 137 laps of the Barcelona circuit and his best time of 1m26.497 was over two seconds slower than the pace set by Nico Rosberg yesterday. Switching from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing for the second day, Frenchman Pierre Gasly emerged third quickest, ahead of Jenson Button who completed a exactly 100 of laps for McLaren-Honda.
McLaren also carried out investigative work ahead of Monaco (low-speed set-up work) and Canada (low-downforce rear wing). Making his debut for Williams, Alex Lynn was just fractionally behind the McLaren in fifth place, followed by Esteban Ocon in the Force India and Esteban Gutierrez who made his debut for Ferrari. Carlos Sainz was seventh fastest for Toro Rosso, with Sauber’s Raffaele Marciello propping up the timesheet.
