The Indy Racing League, better known as IRL, is the sanctioning body of a predominantly oval based open-wheel racing series in the United States and, more recently, Japan. The IRL series is based around one of the world's greatest motor races, the Indianapolis 500.
Tony George created the IRL in 1996 with a breakaway group of drivers from CART. Early in 2008, IRL has acquired the Champ Car series, thus creating just one North American category for single seaters. The series originally raced exclusively on oval tracks, but more races are held today on Road courses. Currently, Dallara provide the chassis, while Honda is the sole engine provider - a Honda engine that is normally aspirated, fuel-injected, V-8 with a displacement of 3.0 litres |
