Ralf not for Hungary

By Flagworld,
Sunday, August 08, 2004

source: crash.net

Ralf Schumacher will not be in action at the Hungarian Grand Prix the German and his management have confirmed.

Schumacher has confirmed the news in the German newspaper, Bild following his accident in the Indianapolis Grand Prix earlier this year.

Whilst many, including F1 medical delegate Professor Sid Watkins, did not expect Ralf to be back for the Hungary race, Schumacher and manager Willi Weber had been saying that Ralf would be racing as soon as possible and Hungary was muted as being the likely race.

The accident in America broke two vertebrae and the recovery from this has not been as expected.

"The two vertebrae are not yet as hardened as is normally the case," explains Weber, who also manages Ralf's older brother, Michael.

"Another accident like the one in Indianapolis and Ralf could be made a paraplegic. Nobody could accept that."

Ralf himself has resigned himself to missing the race. "I feel good, but it's no doubt better for me to listen to the doctors," he tells Bild.

Looks like Antonio Pizzonia gets a second chance to try to impress the Williams team in a race.

Bobby Gearhart won his sixth ARCA 200 at Daytona Beach, but was overshadowed by the stock car debut of Danica Patrick who finished sixth. When the winner was asked what he thought of her he joked "did I miss something," but added gratefully, "it brought some very well needed attention to this series. They [the competitors] raced their guts out."
