Jacques Villeneuve, the younger bother of the late Formula 1 driver Gilles, decided to put a stop to his motorsport career following another nasty crash.
Nicknamed “Uncle Jacques” -- to distinguish him from the other Jacques, Gilles’ son and 1997 F1 World Champion -- the 61-year-old is battling cancer while racing snowmobiles.
Two weeks ago, he crashed again breaking his ankle. He announced his retirement Monday in Valcourt, Quebec. “The last accidents I’ve had made me think seriously. I cannot see myself racing next year at the age of 62 with the risk of being seriously injured, enough to put the rest of my life in jeopardy,” Uncle Jacques said. “I’ve suffered enough and now’s the time to do something else in life.” Jacques Villeneuve clinched the title in the Honda/Michelin series, in Formula Fords, in Formula Atlantics, and also won an IndyCar race. He also attempted twice to qualify for a Formula 1 race.
