Red Light
Poor heating and ventilation to the foot wells. Especially noticeable in winter conditions below minus 15 deg. C. Electrical heating in heated front seats needs to extend higher up to the shoulders. Exposed equipment protruding through the rear parcel shelf into the boot space, catches on large luggage pieces when placed into the boot. On-board computer is inaccurate for fuel consumption and travel distance remaining for fuel in tank.
Yellow Light
Would want better material quality in certain areas of the interior. Styling of interior very average. Noise level inside car when driving should be better. The possible combinations for optional extras is quite limited.
Green Light
Very good traction in snow and slippery conditions. Very good fuel consumption. Very good reliability. Engine, transmission and drive train of high quality. Head lights are good. Boot and interior space is pretty good.
Review:
I bought the vehicle new in 2010 mainly for the expected fuel consumption and safe driving performance on slippery roads. The vehicle delivers in this regard.

Over a period of 2.5 years and a mileage of 97 000km, the average fuel consumption is 12.7km/l for a combination of approximately 65% open road and 35% town driving. On long trips the vehicle will do up to 13.8km/l and the fuel consumption very rarely goes below 11.0km/l for town driving. The car is filled up every time it is refuelled and the fuel consumption is calculated by dividing the trip distance by the quantity of fuel needed to fill up. The on-board computer will typically show a 5% to 7% better fuel consumption than the actual fuel consumption.

The car performs very well and is easy to handle under slippery road conditions. The permanent AWD system of the Subaru makes a big difference when compared to other vehicles for which the AWD system only kicks in as needed. That split second difference the permanent AWD makes, is remarkably noticeable.

Driving from Calgary in Alberta to San Diego in California with a family of 4 people in the car and a boot full to the brim, the car can easily maintain a speed of 140km/hr all the way without a glitch. The 2.5 litre engine is more than adequate for cruising, but acceleration feels just average.

The CVT (transmission) is perfect and I would buy it again.

Reliability overall has been perfect. Not a single problem to report.

I would have liked materials of a higher quality in some areas of the car interior even though none of the materials used have let me down by failing or breaking or tearing. The Subaru on the inside does not feel anything like an Audi, BMW, Mercedes or VW.

My biggest complaint is that the heating to the foot wells at ambient temperatures below minus 15 degrees Celsius is grossly inadequate in the Legacy and the Subaru dealership just brushes me off on this issue.

The Subaru dealership gives good service for run of the mill service items, but there is hardly any support when it comes to dealing with more challenging issues or in depth queries.
The car is practical and delivers very good service, but I can't say that I really enjoy the car or that I'm proud of it. I constantly feel that I should rather have bought an Audi, Mercedes or VW. The Legacy could be more refined.

Overall I don't feel that I've made a mistake by buying the car especially considering the price, but I don't think I would buy a new Subaru again.
