The time will come when “more” and “too much” will be bad words, much like “sport utility vehicles”. It will come sooner than later, I promise you.

Three rows of seating will be relegated to minivans, those that will remain. V8s, already on their way out, will be nothing but a fond memory and large vehicles in which they were found with them.

The Golf Wagon, like the very few compact wagons offered today (Elantra Touring and that’s about it), are often overlooked and replaced on the “considered” list by a compact CUV. (Photo: Philippe Champoux/Auto123.com)

With a litre of gas steadily heading towards $1.50 and the US gallon encroaching on $5, the reality is becoming reality. Needs will be based in reality.

Enter the Volkswagen Golf Wagon, also known as the Jetta SportWagen in the US, for reasons based solely on the fact that the Jetta is better-selling nameplate below the 49th. Don’t be alarmed if you thought it was called the Jetta Wagon here as well, because it was, but only for one model-year, 2009.

The Golf Wagon, like the very few compact wagons offered today (Elantra Touring and that’s about it), are often overlooked and replaced on the “considered” list by a compact CUV. Although I’m a big fan of the latter, small wagons have plenty going for them, especially the Golf.

My wife cares nothing for cars. I may have mentioned this in the past. She rides along in my press cars and never chimes in with a comment or even asks “what are we in this week?”. This time though, she immediately brought up the comfortable seats and within moments, used the same adjective for the ride: Two very important points in favour of the Golf wagon.

I have always been impressed by how well VW puts together seats. In fact, in the last 18 months or so, five acquaintances’ buttocks were so enamoured by VW perches that they bought new Volkswagens. Obviously, this was not the only reason.
