Polestar not just about power
The Polestar package encompassed in the R-Design designation also includes some tweaking to improve the XC60’s handling dynamics. Polestar recalibrates the vehicle’s underpinnings to increase the suspension’s stiffness by 10 per cent. Steering response is tweaked as well, making it 10 per cent faster.

Together, these enhancements impart a much livelier feel to the XC60 without jeopardizing the vehicle’s ride quality. And to be frank, when I heard the Polestar expert mention stiffer spring rates, I was a little concerned. One of Volvo’s attributes in my mind has always been ride comfort, and to see that compromised would be disappointing.

After many miles and over many road surfaces, I’m pleased to report that the XC60 T6 R-Design retains its absorbent ride quality while feeling better planted and more tenacious through tight corners. What’s been captured in R-Design is a complementary blend of comfort and handling performance that in my world is ideal.

Aesthetically pleasing and delightfully comfortable
A huge degree of comfort is found in the XC60’s revised cabin. Its front seats are notably large and supportive, and, enabled me to drive all day without any ill effects. In addition to being luxurious, the interior of the XC60 benefits from the artistry of its Scandinavian-inspired design, which incorporates beautiful hues and rich materials, including textured inlays.

Pricing
While the base 2012 Volvo XC60 is tagged at a reasonable $39,995, moving up to the XC60 T6 AWD R-Design requires an outlay of $53,695, and, it can be optioned to just under $60K. Yes, that’s a lot of coin but in reality it’s purchasing a premium-level AWD crossover that not only performs remarkably well but sets the benchmark for safety and occupant protection, which could be considered priceless.

Customers on the hunt for a high-end, beautifully refined mid-size Euro crossover would be well served by looking beyond the borders of Germany to see what the neighbours to the north have to offer.
