Some 2,000 kilometers with a Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Grand Cherokee is definitely a grand success for the Jeep division of DaimlerChrysler. This big SUV was redesigned a few years ago and it includes some innovation like a more modern optional 4.7 litre SOHC V-8 and a very sophisticated Quadra Drive all-wheel drive system. And there are more than one consumer dreaming of owning such a Jeep, no matter the price of fuel. We had the opportunity to drive a very recent version of a Grand Cherokee Limited for a little more than 2,000 kilometers to verify what was good and what was bad in such a popular SUV.
Our test car did not have much mileage on it when we took delivery of it. The dark red Jeep sported some of the most expensive options including the 4.7 liter V8 and the Quadra Drive and a full leather interior. Obviously, the first contact gives the first impression. Now, this is not the very first Grand Cherokee we try out. So, for the circumstance, we thought it could be interesting to use it for a longer trip than usual.
There is so much to say about the drivetrain. It is modern and in the past, I had the opportunity to find out how effective the Quadra Drive system could be during a Jeep Jamboree. In a deep mud hole where TJ's and Cherokee had to struggle, the Quadra Drive equipped Grands drove through with incredible ease. But most users will never go for such serious off-roading. But they will surely drive them on longer distances, as I did. So I tried not to do too much city driving concentrating on highway driving.
