Porsche’s portly pepper poised for an early launch; skips ‘07 model year.

Three years ago, Porsche smacked sports car fans into a tizzy by broadening its product portfolio beyond—make that way beyond—its legendary sports cars and building its first-ever SUV. Predictably, purists hated the big, heavy thing, but the Cayenne nonetheless gave a healthy boost to Porsche’s bottom line, even if its billowing styling is awkward at best.
For 2008, the Cayenne gets a significant mid-life facelift to keep things fresh. While little of the sheetmetal itself appears to have changed, redesigned fascias and trim pieces signal that the Cayenne is through trying to pass as an extra-large Carrera, and instead is starting to go its own way. The most notable changes are right up front, where the puffy, organic shapes of the original have been stretched into more organized, horizontal elements. The slim headlights represent the furthest departure yet from Porsche’s trademark round “eyes” since the 924/944. The Cayenne’s front bumper once again is broken up by gaping, louvered air intakes, this time bedazzled with vertical turn signal indicators in the corners to further accentuate its width.
Unfortunately, the rear end wasn’t as lucky, its saggy, taillights and lower, clunky bumpers representing change without much improvement. Hi-power (Turbo, Turbo S) models will once again be set apart by their quad pipes and a unique, vented rear spoiler above the backlight.
Though the cosmetic changes are now pretty clear, the mechanical enhancements are harder to see through a zoom lens. But those gaping air intakes do portend a big power increase.
