2005 Vibe has face-lift, upgrades

 By --Ed Garsten / The Detroit News/Sunday, February 1, 2004

The Vibe — one of Pontiac’s success stories in recent years — is receiving a face-lift for 2005.

For the first time, leather seats, OnStar and the StabiliTrak vehicle stability system will be offered along with an upgraded stereo system on the small hatchback that helped lure younger buyers to the Pontiac fold.

The little hatchback also will sport a restyled front end and fascia similar to those that will be featured on other new Pontiac products — such as the Solstice two-seat convertible, G6 sedan and GTO, said Pontiac marketing director Jim Vurpillat.

Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, Vibe sales last year were up 46 percent.

2005 PONTIAC VIBE HAS NEW LOOK AND FEATURES

CHICAGO - A popular performer and an important part of Pontiac's ongoing product renaissance, the Vibe has been freshened for the 2005 model year with a new, distinctly Pontiac flair. Introduced originally in 2003, the Vibe marked a return to sporty, fun vehicles at Pontiac. The renaissance continues with the introduction of the 2005 Vibe at the Chicago Auto Show.

Styling changes include a restyled front fascia and a grille inspired by the 2006 Solstice roadster. Like the Solstice, the Vibe's new appearance characterizes the contemporary performance look of other recently introduced Pontiac models, including the G6 sedan, GTO and Bonneville GXP. All of these new products strengthen the momentum of Pontiac's design and performance renaissance.

"The Vibe has invigorated Pontiac with its unique spin on performance and versatility," said Jim Bunnell, Pontiac-GMC general manager. "It is bringing to the showrooms new buyers who previously didn't consider Pontiac - or, often, any other GM vehicle. The Vibe is our number one conquest vehicle, which means these new buyers aren't currently driving a GM vehicle."

Additional features on the '05 Vibe include:

- Available "Moon & Tunes" package with integrated sub-woofer
- Available StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system
- Available leather seating
- New fabric patterns in Slate and Graphite colors
- Standard passive suppression advanced air bag system on passenger side
- Available side curtain air bag system coupled with side thorax air bags (in seat)
- Available programmable automatic door locks (available with automatic transmission and power package)
- Tire pressure monitor standard on GT and AWD models
- Available OnStar (with one-year Safe & Sound services).

The 2005 Vibe's standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (1ZZ) meets 2007 Ultra Low Emissions (ULEV II) standards. The dual-overhead-cam engine employs variable valve timing to continuously optimize performance and fuel economy. It is rated at 130 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque.

Vibe's increasing popularity with enthusiasts is backed by GM with a line of tailored accessories and performance parts from GM SPO, including a sport package that includes front and rear fascia extensions, side skirts and dual spoilers. A supercharger also is available, which boosts horsepower by 30 percent and torque by 18 percent.

Vibe posted 56,922 sales in 2003 - an increase of more than 45 percent over 2002. Production of the 2005 Vibe begins in May at New United Motor Manufacturing in Fremont, California.

A supercharger also is available, which boosts horsepower by 30 percent and torque by 18 percent.

The stock number for the Vibe's Supercharger is:
-12498927.

Retail approx $3000.00 (US)
Dealer anticipates 4-8 hrs labor for install.

***Remember: this is only for the BASE VIBE. It won't be installed (and/or warranted) for the VIBE AWD or GT***

Looks like it's a 30% increase in hp (up from 130 to 169-170hp)
and only a 18% increase in torque (up from 125 to 149-150lb-ft)

DETROIT - General Motors announced today that GM Performance Parts is offering consumers a new supercharger kit for the Pontiac Vibe. With an Eaton Roots-type blower that feeds the 1.8L engine with 7.5 lbs. of boost, the engine produces 170 hp at 6,800 rpm. This powerful supercharger provides power across the entire RPM range - right away - greatly reducing the power boosting delay usually found in turbocharger kits.

"When you want to make awesome horsepower and torque numbers, the supercharger is the way to go," said Gary Penn, product specialist - GM Performance Parts. "As soon as you hit the gas, you feel the power of the supercharger."

The Eaton Roots-type supercharger was developed to maximize both engine horsepower and torque without sacrificing durability. With the supercharger, horsepower increases up to 30% and torque is boosted up to 18-percent versus stock trim. "The design ensures the supercharger meets GM engineering standards for performance and durability and gives it the clean, OEM look people want," Penn said.

The supercharger also has its own unique vehicle control module calibration, ensuring performance, delivering over 150 lb.-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm - that's over 20 lb.- ft. more torque than the Vibe GT!

Don't have a millennium to install your supercharger? No problem. "You won't have to make modifications or need a big mallet to install our supercharger," Penn said. "Because it was designed to GM's exacting specifications, everything fits precisely - allowing a trouble-free installation."

The supercharger kit contains the mounting brackets, fasteners, air ducts, adapters, PCV hoses, baffle and tubes. An extra fuel injector and accessory drive belt are included and required for complete installation. The kit is only available through GM Performance Parts and can be purchased at any GM dealership under part number 12498927. Installation is also available, ask your dealer for details.

Once consumers get the "go," they can seize the "show" with Pontiac Accessories. In addition to the supercharger kit, GM offers Vibe owners the option of customizing their vehicle with a sports appearance package. The "ground effects" package includes front and rear fascias, side rocker extensions and two spoilers. This package adds the same high level of performance to the looks of the Vibe as the supercharger does for the engine.

"The Vibe lends itself to customization and personalization, factors that many of our customers find very important," said Linda Pesonen, Vibe marketing director. "Sales of our current accessories continue to exceed our expectations and the addition of these new packages will make the Vibe even more attractive, especially to those who may not have considered a Pontiac in the past."

In addition to performance, quality and safety, customers can benefit from the full promise of GM's standard new vehicle limited warranty. For superchargers installed by a GM dealer prior to delivery of a new vehicle or during the GM new vehicle limited warranty period, the warranty begins on the date of installation and continues for the balance of the new vehicle limited warranty or for 12 months/12,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Superchargers installed after the GM new vehicle limited warranty period are covered under a 12 months or 12,000 miles warranty, whichever occurs first.

Consumers can purchase the new Vibe supercharger kit or the sports appearance kit from any GM dealer. To locate your nearest dealer, call 1-800-GM USE US or visit www.Goodwrench.com.
