Mazda Unveils MX-Micro Sport Concept

Mazda describes the MX-Micro Sport concept as a light and nimble 5-door for young drivers with an active lifestyle.

Mazda says the MX-Micro Sport presents the automaker’s sporty, athletic character in a small, compact package. The athletic appearance is developed by a pronounced shoulder line that runs the length of the vehicle; bold front and rear fenders; and 17-inch multi-spoke wheels. The fenders also have a pronounced edge and the forward-leaning stance adds to the aggressive style.

A large air intake in the front skirt and bold vertical slits at either end of the front bumper have been added to emphasize the aggressive look of forward motion. Large headlamp units feature clear lenses and reflectors with a unique curvature to lend expressiveness to the front end; the finely detailed forms in the headlamps are characteristic of Japanese esthetics.

The deep-gloss ZZR red paint is specially formulated, and the A-pillar, B-pillar and the window areas finished in high-gloss black for a strong contrast.

At the rear, the MX-Micro Sport also includes a racing-inspired rear air diffuser, vertical slits at either end of the rear bumper and centrally located dual exhaust pipes.

“I don’t think that Mazda should deliver concepts as a flight of fancy” explained Stephen Odell, Mazda’s senior managing executive officer in charge of global marketing, sales and customer service.

Odell stated that a production version of the MX-Micro Sport concept will be launched into a key automotive market during calendar year 2004, but would not identify the market. He did not rule out that the MX-Micro Sport may be available in North America, and reportedly Mazda is currently reviewing opportunities for the MX-Micro Sport.

 The MX-Micro Sport is powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine has been tuned to provide ample torque throughout the rev range to help deliver a feeling of responsiveness in the throttle pedal.

The interior features black and brown, two-tone leather seats highlighted with red pin striping along the outer seam that complements a similar striping treatment on the instrument panel.

The color coordination, including the continuous black/brown/red leather trim running from the instrument panel to the door trim, is a clear expression of the individuality and active lifestyle that characterizes the target customer. Other design details include vertically stacked air conditioner louvers and audio tweeters at either end of the instrument panel.

The central section of the instrument panel central is finished in a highly reflective silver finish and the instruments are large, black-on-white instruments.

To the right of the steering wheel is a large, multi function display which is also finished in the reflective silver finish. Bright silver is also used to give a satisfying tactile quality to the steering wheel spokes and inner door handles, while meters and horn buttons have chrome-plated rings.

Mazda showed off its MX Micro Sport concept vehicle at the Detroit auto show. Its squared-off looks and upright windshield share the current style with other boxy Japanese designs like the Scion xB.

Mazda has hinted that the MX will be headed for production, and indeed that appears to be true as evidenced by the prototype recently caught undergoing severe cold-weather testing.

Disguises front and rear obscure both ends, but the overall body shape, the door handles, and the shape of the doors and side windows closely match that of the MX Micro Sport concept vehicle. It also appears that the giant-sized fender flares of the concept vehicle are toned down substantially on the prototype.

Mazda is expected to introduce the new car to the U.S. market in mid-2005 as a 2006 model. It should compete well against the Scion xB, since the Mazda will have a more powerful 2.0-liter engine, as compared to the Scion's 1.5-liter engine.
