Jeep’s mainstream SUV readies for generation three.

2005? 2006? 2005? Jeep's launch for the next Grand Cherokee has been pushed back and moved forward several times, but sources now tell us that we might see the new Grand Cherokee at the New York auto show in April, and at dealerships as early as November. And if so, it will arrive as a 2005 model.
Codenamed WK, the Grand Cherokee will sport a longer wheelbase, new independent front suspension and an optional 350-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. A longer seven-passenger version, likely called the Grand Wagoneer, will likely arrive the following year as a 2006 model.

Chrysler has already shown the new Jeep Grand Cherokee to its dealers in the States, but no pictures of it have leaked out from those top-secret events yet. In the meantime, here are some snaps of it out in public, wearing heavy disguising.
This new model - to be launched in the USA at the end of next year and expected to arrive in Europe in 2005 - is said to be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary; it is developed from the current model, though a new version of Chrysler's HEMI 5.7-litre V8 will feature.
Longer and wider than the current model, it will have a longer wheelbase, and the cabin has been tweaked for easier access. There will be no third row of seats, either - a longer-wheelbase seven-seater will join the range later at the end of 2005 or early 2006. Styling will remain similar to the current model, and the trademark wide Jeep grille will also feature - you can just see the outline of this underneath the black plastic and tape.
This model is only an interim facelift, however, until the all-new version built on the next-generation Mercedes M-Class platform makes its debut a few years later.
Politically, the M-Class had to pioneer the new chassis and technology before it appears in the Chrysler line-up. The two models will then be built alongside each other on DaimlerChrysler's production lines in Detroit.
Both will, for the first time, have a unibody (monococque) construction, rather than a traditional 4x4 body-on-frame structure. Styling will be clearly differentiated, however, with the Grand Cherokee retaining a boxier, bluffer outline, similar to the current model.
Although the Grand Cherokee currently tops Jeep's range as its most expensive, best-equipped model, that honour will eventually be taken by an all-new version, a luxury/4x4 crossover built on the same platform, and a sister model to the Mercedes R-Class (GST, or Grand Sports Tourer). This will be more car-like to drive, and be slightly lower-riding - but with no holds barred in the equipment stakes.
Also on the way from Chrysler Jeep next year is a utility pick-up, built on a lengthened version of the Wrangler platform, as well as roomier long-wheelbase conventional Wrangler models. Insiders also hint at a new entry-level 4x4 to rival the Land Rover Freelander, probably derived from either the Compass or Willys2 concept vehicles. This is said to be scheduled for 2005 or 2006
