In one of the two reported cases, four people were injured

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. is launching an inquiry into possibly malfunctioning airbags in 2010-2013 Mazda CX-9 models in response to complaints received by owners. These report that side airbags deployed without reason or warning while the vehicle was in motion

For the moment only two incidents have been attributed to the problem, but in one of those cases four people were injured. The issue was identical in both reported cases: both the left and right-side airbags deployed without reason or warning while the vehicle was in motion.

The NHTSA is looking at 2010-to-2013 CX-9 SUVs, of which 112,000 units were sold in all. Officials at the agency want to uncover the cause of the problem, and by making its inquiry public it hopes to encourage other owners to report any issues they experienced.

There is no recall attached to this problem for the moment, only an inquiry. The NHTSA will or will not call for a recall based on its findings.
