The new 2005 X-terra carries many similar styling cues from the old original X-Terra. Nissan kept the roof basket and added a non-locking lid as well as rear bumper mounted side steps. The X-Terra is based on Nissan's F-Alpha platform, obviously shortened to fit, as it is the same one that underpins the Titan and Armada trucks and the Frontier and Pathfinder. The 2 inch longer wheelbase should show an improvement ride-wise versus the previous model's choppy road behavior.

The X-Terra shares its engine with both the Frontier and Pathfinder. The new 4.0L V6 develops 265 hp and is available with a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission. New for 2005 are hill descent control, optional hill start assist and a vehicle dynamic control system. The first two items are offered only on automatic 4X4 models. The interior has been upgraded although the plastics remain cheap looking.

Price: Starting at $
Availability: February 2005

Auto123.com's impressions:

For those that really enjoy off-roading in a near no compromise way. In the price range, only the Jeep Liberty could pose some real competition. It used to be that the Nissan would have been the safe bet but I'm not so sure anymore.

X-Trail FCV

Nissanshowed off a 2003 X-Trail FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle), which is a modelcurrently on sale in limited quantities in Japan. They are studying thepossibility of offering this SUV in Canada.

Altima Hybrid

Nissan also had a Altima Hybrid test vehicle on display, which should be available at the end of 2006 as a 2007 model.
