The future of GM was on full display at this year's New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). In line with the automaker's plans to reduce fuel consumption and emissions across their model lineups, new gas-saving technologies and hybrids were the name of the game at GM's expansive exhibit.

For instance, the 2010 Buick LaCrosse / Allure, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain will all be powered by a direct-injected engine lineup when they go on sale.

The latter model, a 5-seat crossover from GMC, was on display with a lengthy list of new features that GM officials say works with its impressive styling and engineering efforts to create a GMC-branded crossover for the times.

Terrain will be available with front or all wheel drive and is expected to deliver top-notch fuel economy by way of its direct-injected 2.4-litre four-cylinder base engine. GM's new 3.0-litre direct-injected V6 will be available too.

Saab's new 9-3X sport wagon soaked up attention from outdoor-sports enthusiasts at the show as well. Boasting turbocharged power, Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) technology and a ready-for-anything body and suspension treatment, the 9-3X will compete with machines like the Volvo XC60 and Subaru Outback.

The new Camaro and Cruze were also in attendance, the latter powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine. It goes on sale next year.

Movie fans checked out some of the characters from the popular Transformers franchise, including a 17-foot tall walking, talking version of the upcoming Camaro called BUMBLEBEE.

Of course, the highly anticipated Volt electric vehicle was on display, too. GM says production is anticipated to begin late next year.
