Vincentric, a research firm of strong renown in the automotive field, recently published a 2016 study of diesel-engine cars and trucks and their total costs relative to their gasoline-engine brethren. The company previously had unveiled a list of the vehicles offering the best value on the market, published last summer.
The study’s main conclusion? Approximately 39% of the models studied had a lower total cost of ownership than comparable gasoline-engine models. This advantage applied to all the cars studied, while two-thirds of SUVs and one-third of trucks were also deemed to be money-savers.
“Due to higher purchase prices diesel vehicles generally have more expensive cost-of-ownership compared to their all-gas versions,” explained David Wurster, President of Vincentric. “However, with better fuel economy, nearly 40% of diesel vehicles are showing cost savings.”
The biggest gap in total cost involved the Range Rover, the diesel version of which gave owners over $22,000 in savings after five years. At the other end of the spectrum, buyers of the GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT were better off choosing the all-gas version, which would cost some $8,000 less.
Vincentric’s calculations were based on eight factors: depreciation, taxes and fees, financing, fuel costs, car insurance, maintenance, opportunity costs and repairs. The baseline assumption for each model studied was five years of ownership and 25,000 km driven per year.
