The Canadian market for green vehicles in steady growth

In 2016, sales of electric and plug-in vehicles in Canada surpassed the 10,000-unit mark for the first time. In all, 11,085 of these green vehicles sold to consumers from coast to coast, an increase of 56% compared to the previous year.

The best-selling model in the country? The Chevrolet Volt, which saw its sales increase by 137% over the year before, and in the process wrenched top spot from the Tesla Model S. The latter did come in at second spot, while its Model X stablemate came third.

With overall market share for electric and hybrid cars 1.5 times what it was in 2015, the piece of the automotive-sales pie for this segment is definitely increasing. Of course, it should be noted that this still only represents a minuscule 0.57% of all 1,948,899 new vehicles sold across the country.

Currently considering jumping into the hybrid or electric car fray? Auto123.com offers you a tidy and comprehensive package of all the relevant information you need to begin your shopping process and help you make an informed decision. We also give you a brief overview of the Montreal Electric Vehicle Show, the very first electric and hybrid auto show in Canada, taking place May 26-28, 2017 at Place Bonaventure.

For each model, you’ll find important facts and figures (including base price), links to technical specifications and/or our most recent review, as well as photos and videos. Remember as well that the governments of Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia offer substantial incentives when you buy or lease an electric car, so make sure to consult their websites to know what you will pay once discounts and rebates are factored in.
