New features, some tweaks for flagship SUV

We reported earlier on changes and pricing for the U.S. version of the CX-9 SUV; now Mazda Canada has announced details for the versions we’ll be getting here.

The new stuff
Highlights include standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 360° view monitor, ventilated front seats and SiriusXM Travel Link Services. Starting price for the base model of the 2019 CX-9 will be $36,700, and the model should be at dealers in early September.

Among the updates designed to enhance the in-cabin experience for occupants, we’re noting a refined, retuned suspension that Mazda promises will offer a smoother, quieter and more natural ride, and greater sound suppression by way of a thicker headliner and thicker floor mats.

The powertrain
All Mazda CX-9 models come equipped with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T turbocharged engine that delivers up to 250 hp (on 93-octane gas; 227 hp is available with 87-octane gasoline) and 310 lb-ft of torque (independent of fuel octane). All CX-9 models get the same 6-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission. Mazda's predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive is available in the CX-9 GS trim and standard with all other trim levels.

The versions
The entry 2019 Mazda CX-9 GS comes with standard 18-inch alloy wheels, 7-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment screen with revised Commander control knob, cloth seats, LED headlights and tail lights, heated front side mirrors, one-touch front and rear power windows, rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear privacy glass, three-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio pairing, keyless entry and push-button start, Smart City Brake Support automatic low-speed emergency braking and Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

This version makes do with standard front-wheel drive, though Mazda's all-wheel drive system is available. When equipped with this system, the CX-9 GS also includes Mazda's suite of i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies, including full-speed Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection, Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Keep-assist System, Lane Departure Warning System, High Beam Control System and a colour Multi-information Display (MID).

The CX-9 GS-L model adds 20-inch alloy wheels, power liftgate with programmable height adjustment, power glass moonroof, LED fog lights, leather-trimmed seating surfaces, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, heated steering wheel, 10-way power driver's seat, 4-way power passenger seat, heated second row seats (outboard only), front wiper de-icer, 8-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment screen, two second-row USB ports (each 2.1 amps) and auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The Mazda CX-9 GT trim brings with it a new 360° View Monitor, 7-inch TFT reconfigurable gauge cluster display and ventilated seats first seen in the 2018 Mazda6. These new features supplement the GT's standard Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Front-lighting System, front and rear parking sensors, windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display, LED front and rear signature lighting, Bose 12-speaker premium audio system, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, navigation and new power-folding door mirrors.

New for 2019, CX-9 models equipped with SiriusXM also include a complimentary 5-year subscription to SiriusXM Traffic Plus and Travel Link services, which enables live traffic updates, weather, sports scores, and fuel prices.

The range-topping CX-9 Signature comes with Signature grille illumination, Chroma Brown Nappa leather seating surfaces, a hand-stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel, new Santos Rosewood interior trim, frameless rearview mirror with auto-dimming and LED accent lighting around the shifter area.

CX-9 GS AWD    $40,000
CX-9 GS-L AWD    $43,300
