Catastrophic sales make it highly unlikely Chevrolet will invest in a new generation

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Chevrolet plans to put an end to production of its Sonic car in the next year. The newspaper quotes an anonymous source close to the matter.

Chevrolet refused to confirm or deny the story when reached for comment by Motor1.com website, meaning we’re still just dealing with a rumour. Said a spokesman for the automaker, “We have not announced any plans to stop selling the Sonic in the U.S,” adding that the model remains on the company’s roster for now.

No official confirmation/denial still leaves a lot of smoke for there to be no fire, however. A look at the Sonic’s 2018 sales numbers is telling: only 20,613 units of the model sold in the U.S. last year. This is an abysmal number, but it’s even more disastrous when you consider that it represents a drop of 31.9% in comparison with 2017.

The small-car segment has certainly been in decline across the board, but nowhere near that precipitously. Ford, you certainly know by now, has already announced it is pulling out of the car segments in North America, with the exception of its trusty Mustang.

As for when exactly the Sonic might putter off into the sunset, all we know is that it won’t be in the first half of the year. At that point Chevrolet is set to provide an update on what consumers can expect from the brand for the 2020 model-year.
