The powertrain
The two lower trims of the 2019 Kona – Essential and Preferred – come with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine generating 147 hp, 132 lb-ft of torque, this in conjunction with a 6-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission. By default these versions are FWD, but for an extra $2,000 each can be had with all-wheel drive – a pretty tempting proposition with the Canadian winter on the horizon.
The three higher trims – Luxury, Trend and Ultimate – get that all-wheel drive system included as standard equipment. The Luxury version features the same 2.0L engine as the two entry-level models, but the Trend and Ultimate are powered by a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo engine wedded to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Power goes up accordingly, to 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.

The pricing
Essential FWD - 2.0L 4-cyl. - $20,999
Essential AWD - 2.0L 4-cyl. - $22,999
Preferred FWD - 2.0L 4-cyl. - $22,749
Preferred AWD - 2.0L 4-cyl. - $24,749
Luxury AWD – 2.0L 4-cyl. - $27,499
Trend AWD – 1.6L Turbo 4-cyl. - $26,899
Ultimate AWD – 1.6L Turbo 4.cyl. - $31,799
