Two new TRD Pro Editions for the Off-Roader in you

We’ll be dropping a full first-drive review of the new 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro on Auto123.com in the coming days, so stay tuned! In the meantime though, we’ve learned details about the new edition of the Tacoma truck for 2019. Starting price for the base-model Tacoma is up slightly for 2019, by $435.

The TRD Pros
The obvious highlight is the enhanced TRD Pro editions being made available for the Tacoma. These are the TRD OFF-ROAD and the TRD SPORT editions, whose names pretty much tell you what you need to know about their primary vocations.

New as part of the TRD Pro package for 2019 is a high-mount desert air intake to draw in air from up high and outside the engine compartment. Toyota has also added an updated TRD-logo skid plate, moonroof and JBL audio system, and a new front grille.

The powertrain
The majority of 2019 Tacoma versions come with a 3.5L V6 engine, generating up to 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. All versions with this engine also get a Class IV weight distribution tow hitch, 7-pin wiring harness and Trailer Sway Control technology as standard equipment.

A more fuel economical option for the Tacoma is a 2.7L 4-cylinder engine delivering 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque.

Available transmissions, depending on the trim chosen, are a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission (electronically controlled, and with lock-up torque converter).

Base models get a rear-wheel drive system, while the versions equipped with four-wheel drive get on-demand one-touch 4x4 systems, with an auto limited slip rear differential, two-speed transfer case, and automatic disconnecting differential.

The 2019 Tacoma comes with either a 6-foot cargo bed or a 5-foot bed for the Double Cab versions, and can accommodate either four or five adults, again depending on the trim. Towing capacity ranges from 1,590 kg for the 4X2 Access Cab version to 2,950 kg for the 4X4 Access Cab with V6 engine.

The interior
Standard features included with the Tacoma include dual USB inputs on the audio system (new for 2019), a Display Audio system with touchscreen and steering wheel-mounted controls, Bluetooth, a backup camera, GoPro mount, a multi-information display and a surfeit of in-cabin storage.

Unsurprisingly, Toyota has equipped its Tacoma with a wide range of safety features, starting with the Toyota Safety Sense P bundle of active safety technologies, which include the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. Other safety systems include the Toyota Star Safety System, eight airbags – including driver and front passenger knee airbags, etc.
