The next edition will launch first in Europe

Ford released the first images of its next-generation Focus, one of the automakers most popular models on a global scale. Its standing across the pond is such, in fact, that it will be sold first in Europe. The new photos depict the version that will be commercialized there; for the moment, we don’t know what the North American edition will look like – though we don’t really expect any major differences.

The European Focus will come in a number of different robes and configurations, and it will feature Ford’s CoPilot360 drive assist system; this package includes a host of advanced safety technologies. Ford is also promising more room for occupants. European consumers will benefit from an array of engine choices.

“We’re evolving our successful One Ford strategy to find new ways to create a sporty-looking small car our customers will love. We’ll tailor which cars in the Focus line-up we offer in markets around the world to ensure we best meet customers’ different needs and preferences.”

- Jim Farley, President of Global Markets, Ford

Depending on the region it will be sold in, the Focus will come in a sedan and/or hatchback format, and even a wagon. If the images suggest that the model is being stretched out, that is actually due to the genius of the model’s stylists, as the car’s dimensions will remain the same as the current generation’s.

As for us poor souls in the New World, we will have to be patient. Sadly, we can forget about the wagon, we know that much. As for the mechanics, it is far too early to speculate on what Ford will decide for North America. It is a safe bet that an 8-speed automatic transmission will be part of the package. As well, different drive modes (Normal, Sport and Eco) will be featured. These will directly impact the reactions of the engine and transmission, as well as the firmness and responsiveness of the steering.

Technologically, the Focus will be getting most of the latest that’s out there, including Internet access and smartphone charging (both wireless), the FordPass mobile app, and the newest version of the Sync3 system that incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The European model is set to hit the market as a 2020 edition; its debut should be followed fairly quickly by a North American release.

Amid the noise generated by the early images this week, Ford stayed silent regarding its decision to move assembly of the new Focus to China. The Michigan plant where the current model is built must be re-tooled to accommodate the production of the upcoming reborn Bronco SUV and Ranger pickup.
