The Corsair joins the Aviator, Nautilus and Navigator as Lincoln SUVs with nautically-themed names

The Lincoln MKC will transform into the Corsair as of 2020 when the second generation of the crossover debuts. Not that the MKC has been a miss for the manufacturer; since its introduction in 2015 it has done its part and more to give Ford’s luxury division a boost at a time when it really needed it.

Recent years have seen a revision in the naming strategy used by the automaker, hence the decision to drop the MK designation, which caused its share of confusion. The company feels that by giving each of its models actual, distinct names, it will be easier to create identifiable brand images for them. So the Corsair, already a success as the MKC, seems to have a bright future ahead of it.

Another reason to think that is that the model will likely come with a third powertrain option, of the plug-in hybrid variety.

Cousin to the Ford Escape
The Corsair will sit on the same platform as the Ford Escape, which is as before. This one will be entirely new, however. It made its debut with the Ford Focus that will be sold overseas. The Ford Escape itself will be totally new for 2020 as well.

This already-famous architecture, known as the C2, is versatile while offering more rigidity to the model it underpins. What’s more, it’s designed to accommodate non-traditional powertrains… like the one that will serve the Corsair.

Or at least, that’s what website the Truth About Cars is reporting, this after obtaining the engine codes Ford sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). One of them refers to a 2.5L 4-cylinder that would be backed by an electric motor, with plug-in capability. Of course at this stage we have no idea of the kind of range this setup will give the Corsair, but its mere presence is an interesting development for the Lincoln lineup.

In the U.S. at least, this plug-in hybrid variant would get the name Grand Touring; we’ll have to wait and see if Canada gets the same designation.

The other engines listed are the MKC’s current 2.0 and 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinders, which deliver 237 hp and 275 hp, respectively, according to The Truth About Cars.

As for when the vehicle might be unveiled, nothing is yet certain, but the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall would be the logical choice, especially given that the Detroit auto show will be moving to June next year so won’t be a possibility for an early-year launch.
