6.2L OHV V8 with DFM (Chevrolet Silverado)
The 6.2L V8 engine is a stalwart in the GM family of vehicles, but what elevates it to a position in Wards’ list is its FDM (Dynamic Fuel Management) active fuel management system that helps reduce consumption by between 10 and 15% in comparison with its predecessor, which had to make do with a simpler cylinder-deactivation function.
The FDM system can disengage up to seven cylinders when traveling at highway cruising speed. The key is a management program that helps avoid vibrations that could result from the sequence of cylinders being deactivated. In all, the engine uses 17 cylinder-deactivation sequences.
