The 2020 Jeep Cherokee: 10 Things Worth Knowing We stick this unsinkable chameleon of an SUV under the microscope!

# 5 Waltz of the parent companies

The CJ set off a cavalcade of products derived from the original formula: the Jeep Station Wagon (1946), the Jeep Truck (1947), which was the ancestor to the Gladiator, and the Jeepster (1948).

There was another cavalcade to come, though, and that was of owners of the company producing Jeeps. In 1953, Kaiser Motors bought Willys, and in 1963 renamed it Kaiser-Jeep. Next up was American Motors Corporation (AMC), which acquired the Jeep division from Kaiser in 1970. French automaker Renault became an investor in AMC in 1979, before the Chrysler Corporation swallowed AMC whole in 1987, thus becoming the owner of Jeep (Chrysler would go on to spit out the rest of AMC, keeping only Jeep active).

# 6 Pay close attention now!

If you visit the Jeep.ca website to shop for your next 2020 Cherokee, you’ll find there nine models to choose from. In reality, the offer consists of six proper models and three packages  (North Altitude, Trailhawk Elite and High Altitude). The six models are Sport, North, Trailhawk, Limited and Overland. Wait, you say, that makes only five. That’s because the North version can be had in either 4x4 or 4x2 configuration; it’s the only model in the range that you can get with front-wheel drive, if such is your wish.

All other versions come with all-wheel drive as standard – but even here, things aren’t that simple. There are, you see, three different types of 4x4 systems for the Cherokee…

For the Sport 4x4, you’re spared having to make a choice: it comes only with the Active Drive I system. If you go for the North, Limited or Overland, however, these come out of the box with Active Drive I but can be had with the Active Drive II system as an option. Lastly, the Trailhawk is available with Active Drive Lock, which is exclusive to it.
