2003 Volvo XC90 - A Premium SUV

Does the world need another SUV? Take one look at Volvo's new entry and its plain to see that it will be readily accepted needed or not. And, when you think about it, it makes sense for the practical Swedish manufacturer to have a sport utility in its line-up. After all, if anyone deserves to be part of the SUV craze Volvo, with its thriving business in heavy duty trucks, does.

The XC90 will arrive this fall as a 2003 model, but if you like what you see don't hesitate too long as only 450 examples will enter Canada this year. The commodious 7-passenger rig will incorporate the latest safety equipment, turbocharged power and attractive styling, all for a base price of $54,995.

Don't expect the XC90 to scale Rocky Mountain goat trails as its mission is focused on an entirely different target market. Still, its 218 mm (8.6 in) of ground clearance and electronically controlled AWD system should be capable of light to medium duty expeditions, more than most owners will ever attempt. The base 2.5T model incorporates a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The $59,995 T6 houses the same 2.9 L twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine found in the luxurious S80 sedan, putting out 268-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. What's more, the 6-cylinder ranks the big SUV as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV) while the 5-cylinder meets the more stringent 2004 ULEV II ratings. The XC90 also receives its platform from the capable sedan, which bodes well for its on-road driving dynamics.
