By ,

Volkswagen has finally introduced their new Jetta, which will go on sale shortly as a 2006 model. It will initially offered with an all-new 2.5L inline 5- cylinder that develops 150 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A little later on, the 1.9L TDI turbo diesel 4-cylinder will be available. There is also a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine in the works. It develops 200 horsepower and will be standard in the top-of-the-line GLI model that will also include larger wheels and specific visual cues. Transmissions include an optional 6-speed automatic with Tiptronic and a 6-speed twin-clutch DSG (Direct Sequential Gearbox) automated manual transmission. The new 5th generation Jetta's chassis is 80% more rigid than the outgoing 4th generation model. Over the years, the Jettas have been getting bigger and heavier. The new one is no different. Consider for a moment that the Jetta has gained 75% of its weight in 20 years. Among its standard features will be electromechanical steering, semi-automatic climate control, ABS brakes, traction control and active headrests.Price: Starting at $24,975 (base 2.5L), $26,650 (base TDI), $27,700 (base 2.0T) Availability: May 2005 Auto123.com's impressions: As the best selling European car in North America, will the 2006 Jetta be sufficient to turn Volkswagen's fortunes around? Probably not, at least for a few years until people forget about the regretful reliability issues of the 3rd and 4th generations.
