World premiere of the Porsche Cayman R at LA

Unveiled in Los Angeles today, Porsche's Cayman R promises substantial improvements over the Cayman S .

On sale as of February 2011, the Cayman R is 121 lbs lighter and 10 hp more powerful than the Cayman S. The R has undergone an intensive weight-loss regimen, inheriting a considerable amount of lighter parts that are just as well-adapted.

The new mid-engine coupe comes equipped with a 3.4-litre mill generating 330 hp. The ponies are dispatched via a six-speed manual transmission that will allow the Cayman R to leap from 0-100 km/h in five seconds, en route to top speeds of 280 km/h. The optional PDK automatic sequential transmission shaves 0.1 second of the acceleration numbers and enables top speeds of up to 282 km/h.

The extended profile has been lowered by 20 mm compared to the Cayman S. The R version also includes a spoiler, silver-coloured 19-inch wheels, black headlamp bezels, black side mirrors and contrasting lettering on the side that accentuate the R's sporty demeanour, reminiscent of classic Porsche race cars.
